On March 31st, Bert Ticheler of Leduc, Alberta, passed away peacefully at the age of 82 years.
-
Born in Enschede, Netherlands, Bert immigrated to Canada in 1958 and was a school teacher in Alberta for over 40 years in the communities of Grouard, Wabasca, Hobbema, Assumption, Fairview and Leduc. He loved art, music, nature, travel and sports. Most notably, Bert was an outstanding painter and classical pianist whose talents touched many.

Bert is survived by his two sons Alan (Jacquelyn) and David (Paula) as well as his four grandchildren Kelsey, Willem, Marcie and Elise. He was predeceased by his parents Willem and Clara and by his siblings Jan, Johanna, Zita, Willy, Riek, Carla, Truus, Marianne and Henny.

The Ticheler family would like to express their extreme gratitude to the staffs at Allen Gray Continuing Care Centre, Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre, and Summerwood Village Retirement Residence for their care, compassion and support.

A celebration of Bert’s life was held on Saturday, April 11th, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Richmond Park Church, 9340 - 69 Avenue NW, Edmonton.

Pastor Brad Olson at Richmond Park Church who officiated Dad's celebration ceremony. Your kindness, counseling, beautiful words and genuine effort to ensure everything was so appropriate, were deeply felt and will always be appreciated.

The very talented Pamela Johnson who stepped in on short notice as our pianist. Classical piano was such an important part of Dad's life and it was essential that live classical music be a part of his day. Your performance was beautiful and it truly honored our father.

Everyone who attended our celebration of Dad's life. Friends, relatives and colleagues, you were all so important our father's life and he would be moved, as were we, by the words of comfort and the many wonderful, cheerful and funny memories you shared with us that day.

Pallbearers Ben Dart, Paul Hulseman and Stephen Hulseman who accompanied Alan, David and Willem. Your presence honored him, as did your friendship over so many years.

Father Matthew Hysel from St. Theresa's Parish in Edmonton who not only administered Last Rites at Dad's bedside but also officiated his burial at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery. Your caring, words of comfort, humour and hopefulness were profoundly appreciated.

Everyone who has extended such warm condolences, many of which you can read below. To hear how our father touched your lives really pays tribute to him and offers us comfort, even reason to smile or laugh, as we deal with our loss.

Bert was a wonderful friend and colleague who impacted many lives. I first met Bert in Fairview when he was teaching Grade 6 and we became good friends. Many times we would go for a beer; a picnic to Dunvegan; or sit around the firepit in his back yard with the family joking and sharing memories of Holland. Bert loved life and I will keep his memory close to my heart.

Mr.T was my teacher in Leduc and was one of the best ones I had. He was funny and always smiling. Had a great passion for life and for teaching. Met him later on the tennis court when I was out if school and always treated me with great respect. One of the greats.

Allan/David , my condolences to you and your families. Your dad holds special memories for me as I had him several times as a teacher throughout school, early grades to jr. high.(He was also my teacher when my dad died in 1969).

I was a couple of years older than you two so you may not remember me but I remember going to your house in Fairview when you were just very young boys....I remember him having such a great friendship with Mrs. Pat Campbell.(another of my favourite teachers) It's hard to believe it has been that many years since you lived there. Your dad touched a lot of peoples lives....may this give you some comfort in your time of grieving.

His elementary choir at STM in Fairview was a amazing, life changing experience. Hope you are both well and this former Fairview student thanks you for remembering him for us all.

My deepest sympathy to Bert's family. I have fond memories of the times spent in his class at St. Thomas More School in Fairview. He was a great teacher always inspiring me to be my best. As well he was a fierce competitor on the football pitch during school matches with students..
